  • Resumen
    • Contemporary feminist studies of Hollywood melodramas from the 1940s and 1950s have explored ways in which “women’s” films can be critically re-valued and found to produce readings which resist dominant ideologies. Taking into consideration the differences between classical Hollywood and classical Mexican melodrama, which has a greater foregrounding of dance and music, and also the divergent approaches offered by Mexican (Carlos Monsiváis) and Anglophone (Ana M. López, Richard Dyer) scholars this paper aims to produce similar rereadings of both “new” and “old” Mexican melodramas. The contemporary Danzón thus emerges as a feminist redirection of the classical form the silver-sling backs in Danzón act as tools of abstract female empowerment.
