Resumen de Preservation and density of late quaternary radiolaria in piston-cores from the Banda Sea, Eastern Indonesia

P. J. Van de Paverd, K.R. Biorklund

  • Preservation and density of polycystine radiolarians in three piston-cores from the Banda Sea area vary considerably as a result of the interplay of dissolution, bioturbation, and resedimentation. Dissolution is recognizable by a lowered refraction index of the opaline tests; bioturbation causes distinctive selective breakage, and resedimentation is marked by sharp jumps in radiolarian densities and allochtonous preservation signatures. Each of these factors is influenced by circulation patterns, sediment accumulation rates and especially sediment type, which causes considerable divergence between the original production signal and that which is preserved in the sediment.
