A mediados del S. XVI se inicia la fundación de universidades en la América Española. La diferencia en sus fueros con respecto a las castellanas, muy privilegiadas a través de las Partidas alfonsinas, debe entenderse por la afirmación que se ha ido produciendo del poder del monarca, cada vez más cercano a su carácter absoluto. Patronato regio para las "mayores" de México y Lima y órdenes religiosas en las "menores", es el panorama universitario americano.
In the midst of the XVI th century initiates the foundation of the universities in the Spanish America. The differences in their statuses with respect to the Castellan, privileged by the "Partidas Alfonsinas" (Proclamations), are here for inspection. But, these need to be reexamined, taking into an account one important fact. The differences were result of the monarch's authority inching toward total absolutism. While, the "Patronato Regio" - Royal Patronage were granted to the "Mayores"- Universities funded in Mexico and Lima, whereas, the "menores" were being administrated by the religious orders.
