Tras una breve introducción en que se explica lo que constituye el habla provenzal y se distingue entre paremiografía y paremiología, se presenta el uso de paremias en el mundo antiguo (Egipto, Mesopotamia, Grecia y Roma) y en la iglesia paleocristiana. El grueso del artículo está constituido por una revisión de las obras españolas sobre paremiología y paremiografía y del uso literario que en otras obras se hace. Se cubre también las obras extranjeras más significativas por referirse al habla proverbial hispánica o haber influido en ella.
After a brief summary in which proverbial speech is explained and a distinction is made paroemiography and pareomiology, the article talks about a use of proverbs in the Ancien word (Egypt, Mospotamy Greece and Rome) and in the Paleochristian Church. The article continues doing an extensive revision of Spanish works dealing with proverbial speech, and its literary use. Mention is made of the most outstanding foreign works that deal with Spanish proverbs or that have exerted an influence upon them.
