  • Resumen
    • Acute intoxications by psychotropic and abuse drugs (excluding alcohol) attended in the Emergency Service of the Hospital of Pontevedra during 2001 were studied. After applying a qualitative test Triage TM8 (Biosite Diagnostics) to 554 urine samples, 318 positive results were obtained, that is an 0.56% of the overall emergencies attended at this hospital during this year. A clear prevalence of intoxications related to psychotropic drugs (208 cases), followed by cocaine (56 cases), marijuana (28 cases), opiates (16 cases) and amphetamines (10 cases) was observed. Male patients (55%) were found to predominate, with an average age of 32.1 years. Drug addiction (78 cases) was the most frequent background recorded, followed by previous treatment with psychotropic drugs (60 cases) and psychiatric antecedents (43 cases). The neurological symptoms, especially those derived from consciousness level damage, were the most prevalent (37%), related to the consumption of psychotropic drugs. With respect to treatment, unspecific treatment was the most applied (54%). Although a 45% of the patients needed hospital admission, their low lethality (<1%) confirms the trivial character of these episodes and the satisfactory evolution of the majority of patients.
