Resumen de Racially stereotyped music and conductor race: perceptions of performance

  • The purpose of this study was to examine racially stereotyped music and conductor race on perceptions of conductor and ensemble performance. Further relationships between performance ratings and conductor eye contact, conductor facial expression, conductor posture, evaluator confidence in the conductor, and overall conductor effectiveness were explored. Results found conductor race, regardless of evaluator gender or major significantly affected ratings of conductor and ensemble performances. Performance ratings were also significantly affected when conductors were viewed in a certain order Conductor eye contact, facial expression, and posture had moderate relationships to performance racings. Likewise, evaluator confidence in the conductor and overall conducting effectiveness were moderately related to ratings of ensemble performance. Individual conductor differences were also found in racings of ensemble performance, eye contact, facial expression, posture, evaluator confidence la the conductor, and overall conducting effectiveness.
