    El artículo trata de reconstruir la genealogía de la diferenciación entre cultura popular y alta cultura en la obra de tres de los autores más relevantes en el ámbito de la sociología de la cultura, George Simmel, Theodor W. Adorno y Walter Benjamin. Desde una perspectiva sociológica lo realmente relevante de la producción de estos tres clásicos de los estudios culturales es que en sus escritos subyacen formas diametralmente opuestas de construir lo social. La noción de estilo en Simmel, la dialéctica negativa en Adorno y la iluminación en Benjamin son, en este sentido, la antesala de sendos intentos de imaginar la sociedad moderna.

    This article approaches the genealogy of the differentiation between popular and high culture in the intellectual production of three of the most relevant sociologists of culture, George Simmel, Theodor, W. Adorno and Walter Benjamin. However, far beyond cultural studies, what constitutes their most important contribution from the sociological point of view is the construction of the notion of society that is inherent in their work. In order to asses these ideas the notion of style in Simmel, the negative dialectic in Adorno and the notion of illumination in Benjamin are problematized as opposed ways of social imagination.
