Vinalopo river overflowed in 1571 due to an unusual amount of rain. The floods affected most of Villena's municipal area. The flooding went down the whole of Biar's valley, as it will do on later occasions. Using the document where the freshet is referred to, it will be possible to reveal certain features that show how the water of this river gets checked because of drainage difficulties, as well as the difficulty to specify its course as a constant stream. Considerations about the toponym Vinalopó will stress on the compartamentalized character of this river. reference to later floodings will complement the understanding of this area during these freshet episodes.
