This article seeks to point out the importance of the genre of documentaries as a political instrument. To this purpose, the author reviews the history of the documentary and points out its relationship with the socio-political issues in each period. She also points out that the genre has been used by politically committed directors who have given a voice to the most underprivileged sectors of society and have always backed just causes. Often these directors have become the conscience of our societies.
