This study revolves around the novel "Comandante" (2023), written by Edoardo De Angelis and Sandro Veronesi, and translated into Catalan by Pau Vidal in 2024. It is a documentary story in which the main scene takes place when commander Salvatore Todaro rescues the shipwrecked enemies on the high seas. To save them, he claims to obey the law of the sea. Therefore, Todaro ignores his mandate during the war conflict of World War II. In an initial section, we analyze his decision by comparison with the true guidelines currently stipulated by the Law of the Sea, ratified in 1982 by the UN. We pay particular attention to the international rescue regulations. In addition, when the commander rescues the shipwrecked and takes them on board, a lot of hostility is generated on the ship because sailors of opposing languages, nationalities and ideologies live together. For this reason, in a later section, we look at the multilingual aspect of life on board, in this case, compared to the current linguistic and sailing reality. Finally, we note some differences between the legal policy exercised at sea and on land.
