This article examines the political and military actions of Manqueante, cacique of the Mariquina region, during the 1640s and the first half of the 1650s. It argues that he was a key actor in the region during those years, pursuing his own political agenda in his relations first with the Dutch and later with the Spaniards. The article concludes that he forged alliances with both European groups directed against his indigenous enemies, particularly Curiguanque. Finally, the broad alliance he constructed weakened and ultimately collapsed with the indigenous uprising of 1655.
