This research proposes a new origin for the myth of the gamusi-no, a popular hunting joke in Spain. I maintain that this fantastic creature derives from a real ichthyological bieng, documented in Cuba around the middle of the 19th century, the story of whose capture was soon transported to the Iberian Peninsula in the form of a joke. I also analyse the represen-tation of the gamusinos in the literature of the northern hemisphere, which gives testimony to the rapid propagation of the joke. Finally I propose an interpretation of this story according to which the animal symbolises: a trick-ster devoted to halting the human hunter’s dominion over nature.
