Philip II always maintained a close relationship with the Royal Chapel of Seville. In 1570, during his visit to the Andalusian capital, he venerated the Virgin of the Kings in her tabernacle, admired the relics of Saint Leander, paid homage to the body of Ferdinand III, viewed the mortal remains and tombs of other royal predecessors, and contemplated the effigies of the Holy King, Alfonso X, and Beatrice of Swabia. But in which chapel did all this take place? In this article, we propose a new hypothesis regarding its location in the Patio de los Naranjos of the cathedral. It was the second chapel provisionally occupied in that cloister between 1543 and 1579, when it was moved to its current location at the cathedral’s apse. To support this, we analyse the preceding historical circumstances and, using archival documentation and manuscript sources, we develop our thesis and reconstruct the visit of the Prudent King to this significant sacred space.
