As a consequence of the continuous and acute shortage of circulating currency that characterized the economy of Puerto Rico, particularly after the definitive cessation of remittances from the "Situado Mejicano" at the beginning of the nineteenth century, towards the last third of the period the practice of issuing "private money" in the form of tokens to solve daily exchange or retail transactions and even as substitutes for payment of wages developed and spread, mainly in the country's agricultural activities. The practice of payment in tokens was extensive and intense in shops, plantations, and manufacturing establishments, to such an extent that they motivated various attempts at prohibition by the local government, most of which failed. This article identifies and studies a series of primary and secondary sources with the purpose of defining the prevalence or persistence of the use of these token systems, not only under Spanish rule, but also under the new U.S. colonial authorities until the first third of the twentieth century
