The Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Charles III was instituted in 1771 by the King of the same name, with the aim of honoring all those noble people who stood out for their actions in benefit of Spain and the Royal Person. Awarded to Spaniards and foreigners alike, for both civil and military merits, it quickly achieved great prestige both inside and outside Spain, and has been profusely awarded ever since.

Its insignia, in their different categories, present in numerous museums and collections, maintain a design that might seem to have undergone little change since its institution, but on closer inspection, it is clear that they show differences that go beyond what could be considered a mere personal touch of the maker. Therefore, as this is the most important Spanish civilian decoration, and despite the extensive literature available, there is a lack of study on the different models of the order's insignia and their dating, even if only approximate.

This article aims to study how these subtle changes were introduced into the designs of the insignia, giving rise to differences between them, with the aim of defining models and dating them if possible, and if not, at least establishing a chronological order that allows one insignia to be placed in time in relation to another.
