Historically, the study of neuroscience as applied to sports has evolved from reductionist approaches focused on physiology toward more integrative perspectives that bring together cognitive, psychological, and social processes to optimize human performance. Consequently, understanding the athlete’s brain involves analyzing complex systems of regulation and adaptation within the highly demanding sports environment and the specific social context in which the athlete competes. Essentially, one of the purposes of this article is to analyze the contributions of neuroscience to sports from different perspectives that are interconnected through the implicit language of ideas and concepts related to complex systems, such as complexity, nonlinearity, uncertainty, emergence, and self-organization, in order to offer a more holistic understanding of the role of neuroscience in the development of contemporary athletic performance. Therefore, the objective of this article is to discuss certain approaches and foundations of neuroscience in sport from a transdisciplinary perspective.
