The magistrates and their counterparts the governors, in their capacity as heads of the governments, played a crucial role in the Canary Islands since the end of the 15th century, when the Catholic Monarchs entrusted them with the effective integration of the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma into Castile, remaining at the head of their municipalities until the end of the Old Regime, as essential authorities; although with the passage of time they had been losing functions and relevance. However, the promulgation of the Constitution of 1812 marked the beginning of the end for these officers, who were definitively excluded from the Administration after the death of King Fernando VII, in 1833, giving way to the constitutional municipality.
