Algunas puntualizaciones sobre la estancia en Nápoles de Valentín Carderera y su repercusión intelectual

    Es bien sabido que la breve estancia napolitana de Carderera (1824-1825) resultó decisiva para la configuración de su pensamiento y de los intereses que habrían de marcar sus investigaciones: el arte bajomedieval, la escultura funeraria, la búsqueda de rasgos identitarios en las artes españolas a lo largo de la historia y la salvaguarda del patrimonio. Este artículo propone una serie de reflexiones adicionales en torno al papel desempeñado por la ciudad italiana en la actividad intelectual del oscense. El análisis de los dibujos y de las menciones a monumentos partenopeos en sus publicaciones permite observar que Carderera no siempre se limitó a evocar lo efectivamente contemplado, sino que, sin declararlo de manera explícita, aspiró a reconstruir los contextos ya desaparecidos. Esta práctica plantea interrogantes sobre las fuentes escritas que pudo haber empleado y que aquí se intentan identificar. Asimismo, algunos documentos inéditos permiten precisar ciertos aspectos relativos a su estancia en Italia; en particular, se desprende que dio principio al proyecto inconcluso que lo ocuparía hasta su fallecimiento– el estudio de la escultura funeraria española hasta el siglo XVI inmediatamente después de su paso por Nápoles, antes de su regreso a España. Se presentan nuevos dibujos y, a partir del análisis estilístico y documental, se rechazan otros tradicionalmente atribuidos a Carderera.

    It is well known that Carderera’s brief stay in Naples (1824-1825) was decisive for the development of his thought and of the themes that would shape his research: late medieval art, funerary sculpture, the search for identity traits in Spanish art throughout history, and the safeguarding of the heritage. This article offers a series of additional reflections on the role played by the Italian city in Carderera’s intellectual activity. The analysis of his drawings and of the references to Neapolitan monuments in his publications reveals that Carderera did not always limit himself to evoking what he had directly observed, but rather, without stating it explicitly, sought to reconstruct lost contexts. This approach raises questions about the written sources he may have consulted, which this study attempts to identify. Moreover, some unpublished documents clarify aspects of his Italian period; in particular, they suggest that he began the unfinished lifelong study of Spanish funerary sculpture up to the sixteenth century immediately after his visit to Naples, prior to his return to Spain. In addition, the article presents new drawings and, through stylistic and documentary analysis, propose the exclusion of other sketches traditionally attributed to Carderera.
