Zepamendiko eta Arroko Soloako haizeolak = Ferrerías de monte de Zepamendi y Arroko Soloa: Legutio

  • Within the framework of a research project carried out to determine the evolution of ironworking between the Iron Age and the Roman Era, we excavated 3 sites in Álava, two of them located in Legutio: Zepamendi and Arroko Soloa. A hybrid method was used, combining geophysical techniques and open area excavation based on assessment sondages, dug both manually and using mechanical means. The results were not as expected. In the case of Zepamendi, the entire area occupied by the finery forge is in fact nothing more than a dumping ground for metallurgic waste. In other words it is basically a slag heap much larger than any other recorded in this region. In the case of Arroko Soloa, the post-deposition processes undergone by the site made our research very difficult, although the actions taken did reveal information vital to the future detection and study of the finery forge infrastructures.
