  • Among the many foreign artists who lived and worked in seventeenth-century Rome, there is scant evidence of any from England. Documents presented here concerning a little-known painting depicting Thomas Becket that adorns an altar in the Venerable English College, Rome, suggest that an English artist with possible ties to Spain was commissioned to create it.
