In 1064, the term land of Penafiel first emerged. In 1258, the parishes of the municipality were inventoried under the jurisdiction of Penafiel de Sousa. On May 13, 1384, KingD. João I donated the jurisdiction of Penafiel de Sousa to Porto. On March 14, 1741, whenArrifana was merely a parish within that jurisdiction, D. João V elevated Arrifana deSousa to the status of town. Finally, on March 3, 1770, D. José I elevated Arrifana de Sousato the status of city and named it Penafiel. From that moment on, the city of Penafiel developed and established itself in the regional context. However, the time between theRegeneration Movement and the establishment of the Republic marked a period of profound changes. During this period, a new economic development model emerged and influenced the municipal structure. In this reform-oriented context, Manuel Pedro Guedesmade an important contribution to the city’s architectonic heritage during his mandatesas Mayor of Penafiel (1882-1886).
