  • Resumen
    • Since its inauguration, the Berlin Memorial has been the object of critical formulationsregarding its pertinence and meaning. Coming from different fields of knowledge, the mostcommon criticisms of the memorial are centered around its impossibility of providing anaxiomatic representation, and whether it can be classified as art, architecture, or even amemorial. This indistinct aspect of the memorial poses a fundamental problem regardingthe impact it has on the individual’s perception. Taking this problem into consideration,I propose a reading of the memorial based on psychoanalytic concepts that have beenappropriated by architectural theories that address the psychological mechanisms at playwhen faced with the absence of explicit representation. In the context of the 1997 Berlin Memorial competition, the focus was on the absence ofvarious elements, primarily the Jews who were murdered during the Shoah. Additionally, itwas also part of an initiative to rebuild the urban voids that were exposed in the city afterreunification. Within this scenario, an analysis is constructed to understand how thememorial’s project resists the symbolic mechanisms of representation, encompassing boththe new Berlin economy and the past Nazi and Jewish cultures. The hypothesis presented isthat there exists the potential for individual psychic subversion when confronted with thenonfigurative interstices of the memorial.
