    Este artículo ofrece un desarrollo de fundamentación teológica de la dignidad hu-mana como pilar donde se asientan los derechos humanos. Si el punto de partida es el magisterio social de la Iglesia católica, la palanca que lo impulsa es la obra de Franciscode Vitoria, sobre todo su impresionante Relectio de Indis, en el quinto centenario de su llegada a Salamanca, que muestra la gran actualidad de su pensamiento. El afrontó desde la teología de la creación (el ser humano creado a imagen de Dios) los problemas del profundo cambio de época que comportó la planetización del “descubrimiento” de nuevas tierras y de la primera circunnavegación completa de la Tierra, proponiendo el ius gen-tium, que combina el principio personalista y el comunitario. También hoy la teología moral está llamada a afrontar la peliaguda cuestión del control ético y legal del poder, desde el diálogo entre la revelación y la razón, en un mundo tecnológico donde las posi-bilidades para construir y destruir andan desbocadas.

    This article offers a theological foundation for human dignity as the pillar on which human rights are based. While the starting point is the social teaching of the Catholic Church, the driving force behind it is the work of Francisco de Vitoria, especially his impressive Relectio de Indis, on the fifth centenary of his arrival in Salamanca, which shows how relevant his thinking is today. He addressed the problems of the profound change of era brought about by the globalisation of the “discovery” of new lands and the first complete circumnavigation of the Earth from the perspective of the theology of crea-tion (human beings created in the image of God), proposing the ius gentium, which com-bines the personalist and communitarian principles. Today, moral theology is also called upon to address the thorny issue of the ethical and legal control of power, through dialogue between revelation and reason, in a technological world where the possibilities for construction and destruction are running wild.
