  • In his groundbreaking study, Behold the Land: The Black Arts Movement in the South, leading Black Arts Movement scholar James Smethurst recovers the history of local and regional arts collectives and institutions in the South. Smerthurst focuses on the Southern region because, as he argues, "the South was central to almost every radical Black notion of African American identity and cultue"(2).
