Presencia y utilización de la máquina de vapor en España a través de los contenidos del “Diccionario” de Pascual Madoz

    La máquina de vapor es, sin duda, un componente icónico de la Revolución Industrial y ha resultado esencial durante décadas como elemento motriz en diversas aplicaciones industriales, mineras y de transporte. Su empleo y repercusión en España ha sido ampliamente estudiada, sobre todo en sus aplicaciones en el ferrocarril y en la navegación; no obstante, no se dispone de suficiente información acerca de los primeros pasos en la utilización de las máquinas de vapor en los sectores de actividad industrial y minera. Por ello el disponer de la información suministrada por el Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de ultramar, coordinado por Pascual Madoz Ibáñez (Pamplona, 1806 - Génova, 1870), constituye una interesante foto fija de la implantación de la máquina de vapor en la España de mediados del siglo XIX.

    Efectivamente, entre 1845 y 1850 ven la luz los 16 tomos del Diccionario geográfico estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de ultramar de Pascual Madoz, que, entre otras muchas cosas, supone un inventario bastante adecuado de los principales medios de producción y maquinaria industriales existentes en la España de finales de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Como elemento complementario de contextualización, recuérdese que es justamente en 1850 cuando se promulga el Real Decreto de creación de la carrera de Ingenieros Industriales. Elemento adicional que resalta el interés que puede presentar la mitad del siglo XIX en relación con la historia de la industrialización en España.

    Tras el análisis del conjunto de los 16 tomos del Diccionario de Madoz, se identifican algo más de 100 referencias a la máquina de vapor en las entradas correspondientes a unas 50 localizaciones geográficas peninsulares españolas. Cataluña y Andalucía comprenden más de la mitad de las citas a estos ingenios de vapor instalados en sectores industriales tales como el textil, el minero-metalúrgico y el agroalimentario.

    The steam engine is undoubtedly an iconic component of the Industrial Revolution and has been essential for decades as a driving force in various industrial, mining and transportation applications. Its use and impact in Spain has been widely studied, especially in its applications in railways and navigation; however, not enough information is available about the first steps in the use of steam engines in the industrial and mining sectors. Therefore, having the statistical information provided by the Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de ultramar coordinated by Pascual Madoz Ibáñez (Pamplona, 1806 - Genoa, 1870), constitutes an interesting still photo of the implantation of the machine steam in the Spain of the mid-nineteenth century.

    Indeed, between 1845 and 1850 the 16 volumes of the Diccionario geográfico estadístico-histórico de España y sus posesiones de ultramar were published, coordinated by Pascual Madoz, which, among many other things, it is a fairly adequate inventory of the main means of production and industrial machinery in Spain at the end of the first half of the 19th century. As a complementary element of contextualization, remember that it was precisely in 1850 when the Royal Decree creating the career of Industrial Engineers was promulgated. Additional element that highlights the interest that the middle of the 19th century may present in relation to the history of industrialization in Spain.

    In the set of 16 volumes of the Madoz Dictionary there are more than 100 citations to the steam engine, in the entries corresponding to 50 Spanish peninsular geographic locations. Catalonia and Andalusia comprise more than half of the appointments to these steam mills installed in sectors such as, preferably, textiles, mining-metallurgy and agri-food. This ruling out the use of the steam engine in railway traction and in the operation of ships.

    In the present work, the citations to the steam engine in the Madoz Dictionary will be analyzed, as well as to structure and systematize its contents in order to provide a rigorous visualization of the presence and use of steam engines in the years prior to the middle of the 19th century. With this, it is expected to have a more precise vision of the use of this important means of actuation, which allows us to appreciate the level of implementation in Spain of this technological advance derived from the British Industrial Revolution.
