Since their approval in 2015, and especially since 2020, both governments and international institutions have among their goals the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 agenda to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. In the field of architecture, sustainability is increasingly taken into account in the execution of works as an indispensable requirement, and the field of industrial heritage rehabilitation is no exception, as shown by the implementation of new strategies in our country, the holding of congresses on this subject, or the increase in research on the subject. However, the relationship between the rehabilitation of industrial heritage and the SDGs is still largely unexplored, thus giving rise to the need for study.

Throughout this research we will study how many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are currently being taken into account when tackling an industrial heritage rehabilitation project in Spain, and at the same time we will try to propose a guide that shows contributions and advances through changes in the work methodology, including the consideration of new premises from the very approach of the project.

The methodology of this study will be based on the parameterised analysis of one example of rehabilitation of industrial heritage elements in Spain carried out after the publication of the SDGs. For this purpose, the European research Versus, heritage for people, consisting of 15 lessons divided into three blocks (environmental, socio-cultural and socio-economic) on sustainability that can be extracted from vernacular architecture, will be used as a system of analysis.

Finally, a comparison of the results will be established with respect to the assumption of a work that complies with all the points of Versus, heritage for people in order to show whether our field is really making every possible effort to move towards a sustainable future.

This research is the result of the R+D+i Retos Investigación Project entitled Vulnerability, resilience and strategies for heritage reuse in deindustrialised spaces, Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, call for proposals 2018.
