This article examines the origins of fascism and its relationship with communism, with the aim of clarifying both concepts in light of their distorted use in contemporary debate. Fascism emerged in postwar Italy as a reaction to the rise of the labor movement and the revolutionary threat, within a broader context of crisis following the First World War. It is defined as a mass movement, hierarchical and violent in nature, operating in the service of national big capital and oriented toward halting the advance of communism. Furthermore, the article critiques the lack of rigor in certain historiographical approaches, such as the theory of totalitarianism, which seeks to simplistically equate fascism with communism despite their fundamentally antagonistic character. The origins of fascism must be understood within their specific historical context as a counterrevolutionary response of a capitalist system in crisis.
