A Língua Inglesa no Brasil e suas implicações para os sujeitos brasileiros contemporâneos

    This study aims at analyzingt he concept of linguistic imperialism - the deliberate transfer and imposition of a dominant language upon other peoples -applied in this case to the English language and the role it plays in the Brazilian national context, highlighting possibleimplications for its contemporary subjects. Based on the assumption that the use of English and the import of anglicisms, sometimes exaggerated and unnecessary, is directly linked to the desire to take hold of the status sported by the language, usually coated in notions of modernity and technological and cultural advancement, the presence and influence of English were investigated with a focus on some main fields of human activity, namely: computing, movies, commerce and advertising. Overallresults of the study suggest that Brazilians tend to perceive the English language in a positive way, conferring it qualities and taking it as an ideological referent. The use of English words, rather than their equivalent in Portuguese would serve as an element of social distinction, conferringprestige to enunciators as well as to their statements.

    Este trabalho busca analisar o conceito de imperialismo linguístico - a transferência e imposição deliberadas de uma língua dominante a outros povos -aplicado, neste caso, à língua inglesa e ao papel desempenhado por ela no contexto nacional, com o intuito de evidenciar suas possíveis implicações para os sujeitos brasileiros contemporâneos. Partindo da hipótese de que o uso da língua inglesa e a importação de anglicismos, por vezes exagerada e desnecessária, está diretamente ligada ao desejo de se apossar do status ostentado pelo idioma, em geral revestido por noções de modernidade e avanço tecnológico e cultural, investigamos a presença e influência do inglês em alguns campos da atividade humana considerados mais representativos, tais como: informática, cinema, comércio e publicidade. De modo geral, verificou-se que os brasileiros tendem a perceber a língua inglesa de forma positiva, atribuindo-lhe qualidades e tendo nela um referencial ideológico. A utilização de vocábulos ingleses, em detrimento de seus equivalentes em língua portuguesa, visaria, pois, em última instância, servir como elemento de distinção social e conferir prestígio aos enunciadores e aos enunciados que produzem.
