The scope of this article is to describe and analyze the variation of the Portuguese language spoken by the inhabitants of the Gurutubano Territory located in the northern central region of the Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The investigation is supported by the postulates of the Sociolinguistic Variation theory developed by William Labov, the works by Fishman, Hymes and Gumperz and in Weinreich´s studies. The result is a descriptive, explanatory and synchronic work about the Portuguese spoken by the Gurutubanos with some additional diachronic information about the formation and evolution of such language variation, thus revealing the existence of a Brazilian Portuguese rural language with specificities which allows it to be classified as Brazilian Gurutubano Portuguese.

O objetivo deste artigo é descrever e analisar a variante do português falado pelos habitantes do Território Gurutubano, da região Centro-norte de Minas Gerais. A investigação alicerçouse nos postulados teóricos da sociolinguística ariacionista laboviana, apoiou-se também nos trabalhos de Fishman, Hymes, Gumperz e utilizaram-se, ainda, as referências básicas de Weinreich. O resultado foi um trabalho descritivo-explicativo sincrônico do português falado pelos gurutubanos. A isto, acresceram-se algumas informações diacrônicas relativas à formação e evolução observadas no decorrer do estudo, que mostraram a existência de um falar do português brasileiro rural gurutubano, ou seja, um falar que possuí traços específicos que o caracterizassem como um falar de área rural gurutubana: o português brasileiro gurutubano.
