Wine cellar architecture in the Sherry-producing region of Marco del Jerez experienced an extraordinary qualitative and quantitative development in the two central quarters of the 19th century. Both master builders and qualified architects were involved in this period. The presence of the latter made industrial construction in Jerez unique in comparison with other national and European areas. Generally, it was not until the end of the century that the industrial building was decisively incorporated into the activity of architects. However, within Jerez’s industrial production, these professionals contributed decisively to the definition and evolution of the proto-industrial model.Among the architects working in the city of Jerez during these decades, three stand out in particular. Their works place them among the most outstanding Andalusian architects of the mid-century: Balbino Marrón y Ranero (1810-1867), who would later become the municipal architect of Seville; Valentín Domínguez (¿?-1854), author of one of the most typologically advanced proposals for Jerez wineries in the 19th century; and José Esteve y López (1828-1901), responsible for the city’s extraordinary iron-structured market. These three authors significantly contributed to the codification of the winery model. Moreover, their compositional research opened up new formal and urban avenues for the development of industrial construction. The objectives of this paper include deciphering the contribution of these three authors to the construction of the lower Andalusian wine cellars and objectively qualifying their industrial work. The main objective is to evaluate the transcendence of their proposals in the development of Jerez’s typological ensemble, assessing their repercussion on the current reading and understanding of Jerez’s urban landscape.
