I dipinti altomedievali staccati della chiesa di S. Adriano al Foro Romano: contesto spaziale, vicende conservative e musealizzazione

    The article examines the paintings of the early medieval enclosures and the external oratory of the basilica of St Hadrian in the Roman Forum, the ancient Curia Senatus, rediscovered by Alfonso Bartoli in the 1930s and immediately detached following the destruction of the liturgical furnishings and oratory of the church, with the aim of restoring the famous Senate. This is an early mediaeval context on which it seems appropriate to reflect further on both the chronology of the paintings, the original function of the spaces and the thematic arrangement of the pictorial decoration, as well as on the detachment of the paintings and their subsequent display in the Museo Nazionale Romano-Crypta Balbi.

    L’articolo prende in esame le pitture delle recinzioni altomedievali e dell’oratorio esterno della basilica di S. Adriano al Foro romano, antica Curia Senatus, riscoperte da Alfonso Bartoli negli anni Trenta del Novecento e immediatamente staccate a seguito della distruzione degli arredi liturgici e dell’oratorio, con l’obiettivo di ripristinare il celebre Senato. Si tratta di un contesto altomedievale sul quale appare opportuno riflettere ancora sia riguardo alla cronologia dei dipinti, alla funzione originaria degli spazi e alla disposizione tematica della decorazione pittorica, sia relativamente allo stacco dei dipinti e al loro successivo allestimento negli spazi del Museo Nazionale Romano-Crypta Balbi.
