Musealization of the Repatriated Fresco-Fragments from the Turkish Occupied Areas of Cyprus

    In seguito all’invasione turca del 1974 e all’occupazione ancora in corso nel Nord di Cipro, oltre cinquecento chiese sono state saccheggiate, quindici-ventimila icone rubate, frammenti di pitture murali e mosaici staccati e venduti all’estero, mentre altri sono andati distrutti. Dal 1979 le autorità della Repubblica di Cipro ricevono informazioni sui saccheggi del patrimonio ecclesiastico e indagano su numerosi casi. I loro sforzi hanno portato al rimpatrio di numerose opere d’arte che oggi sono esposte nel Museo Bizantino della Fondazione Arcivescovo Makarios III a Nicosia. I casi più importanti sono le due composizioni di affreschi della chiesa di Cristo Antiphonitis, vicino a Kyrenia (XVI secolo) raffiguranti il Giudizio universale e l’Albero di Jesse. Queste composizioni sono state rimpatriate in più di cento frammenti. Un altro caso emblematico riguarda gli affreschi dell’abside e della cupola della cappella di S. Eufemiano nel villaggio di Lysi (XIII secolo) costituiti da trentasei frammenti, già assemblati dalla Fondazione Menil di Houston (Texas) e rimpatriati dagli Stati Uniti nel 2012. Altri frammenti, ricoverati oggi nel Museo Bizantino, provengono dalla chiesa di S. Solomoni a Komi tou Gialou (IX secolo), dalla Panagia Pergaminiotissa ad Akanthou (XII secolo), dalla Panagia Apsinthiotissa a Sinchari (XII e XIII secolo) e dalla Panagia ad Askeia (XV secolo). Ad aprile 2024 sono iniziati i lavori di restauro del Museo Bizantino di Nicosia con un nuovo studio museologico volto a riunire la maggior parte dei frammenti di affreschi ed esporli nel miglior modo possibile con informazioni, video e fotografie sulla loro provenienza, sul saccheggio e sugli sforzi per rimpatriarli dall’estero. Il Museo Bizantino, così rinnovato, è stato inaugurato il 9 marzo 2025.

    Following the Turkish invasion in 1974 and the on-going occupation, over 500 churches were looted, 15,000-20,000 icons have been stolen, and fragments of wall paintings and mosaics were detached and sold abroad, while others were destroyed. Since 1979 the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus receive information about looting of the ecclesiastical heritage and investigate several cases. Their efforts led to the repatriation of several artworks that today are exhibited in the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Nicosia. The most important cases are the two fresco compositions from the church of Christ Antiphonitis, near Kyrenia (16th century) representing the Last Judgement and the Stem of Jesse. These compositions were repatriated with more than a hundred fresco fragments. Another emblematic case deals with the frescoes of the apse and the cupola of the chapel of St Euphemianos in the village of Lysi (13th century) with thirty-six fragments, already assembled by the Menil Foundation in Houston (Texas) and repatriated from the US in 2012. Other repatriated fragments in the Byzantine Museum come from the church of St Solomoni, Koma tou Gialou (9th century), Panagia Pergaminiotissa, Akanthou (12th century), Panagia Apsinthiotissa, Sinchari (12th and 13th centuries) and Panagia, Askeia (15th century). In April 2024, the works of the renovation of the Byzantine Museum of Nicosia began with a new museological study aiming to re-unite most of the fresco fragments and expose them in the best possible way with information, video and photographs about their provenience, the looting, and the efforts to repatriate them from abroad. The renovated Byzantine Museum was opened to the public on March 9, 2025.
