La relevancia cultural de la Orden de San Agustín en la Valencia del siglo XVI: El caso de fray Miguel Bartolomé Salón (1539-1621)

    El objeto del presente estudio es mostrar la contribución de la Orden de San Agustín al panorama eclesial y cultural en Valencia entre los pontificados de santo Tomás de Villanueva y san Juan de Ribera (1545-1611) ofreciendo noticias del convento de la Orden en aquellos años y su contribución a la cultura especialmente a través de las cátedras de la facultad de Teología de la Universidad de Valencia y en particular del ejercicio docente de fray Miguel Bartolomé Salón en dicha facultad, cuyo prestigio le sirvió para que Juan de Ribera le encargara la elaboración de un perfil biográfico del arzobispo de Valencia, perteneciente a la Orden de San Agustín, fray Tomás de Villanueva, que gobernó la archidiócesis valentina desde los 56 años de edad en 1545 hasta su muerte en 1555. La  intención de la crónica de Salón era documentar la trayectoria del prelado agustino aportando pruebas meritorias para justificar la petición de beatificación y canonización como ocurrió en 1618 y 1658 respectivamente.

    The aim of the present study is to show the contribution of the Order of S. Augustine to the ecclesiastical and cultural panorama in Valencia between the pontificates of St.Thomas of Villanueva and St. John of Ribera (1545-1611) by offering news of the convent of the Order in those years and its contribution to culture especially through the chairs of the faculty of Theology of the University of Valencia and in particular the teaching practice of fray Miguel Bartolomé Salón in that faculty whose prestige led Juan de Ribera to commission him to draw up a biographical profile of the archbishop of Valencia, member of the Order of St. Augustine fray Thomas de Villanueva, who governed the archdiocese of Valencia from the age of 56 since 1545 until his death in 1555. The intention of Salón’s chronicle was to document the trajectory of the Augustinian prelate by providing meritorious evidence to justify the petition for his beatification and canonisation, as occurred in 1618 and 1658 respectively.
