This paper analyses the references to Greek and Roman history and culture in 20th century Chilean first sports magazines through the classical reception studies approach. It reveals how these publications reinterpreted the classical past to construct cultural meanings and moral values around sports oriented towards mass culture. It argues that these magazines used classical knowledge to promote ideals of citizenship and virtue, in a context of liberal and nationalist speeches that advocated for the country’s progress.
