In this article, I describe and analyze the uses of the polysemic markerra’e in Paraguayan Guarani (PG) and Paraguayan Spanish (PS), where it has been borrowed from PG. In PG, ra’e is used for marking the recent past, inferred evidentiality and the mirative. Pertinent examples are provided from own field work data.Whereas the recent past and inferential evidentiality can be found as the only functions of ra’e within a sentence, the function of mirativity is always intertwined with the recent past and/or inferential evidentiality. All those functions mentioned can also be found in the uses of ra’e in PS as represented in the Paraguayan yellow press. However, additional functions of ra’e can be found in PS, e.g. affirmative meaning
