  • Resumen
    • Nowadays, the proportion of studies analysing visual narratives is considerably minor in comparison to the rich research on verbal narratives. However, this does not mean that some of the phenomena present in verbal language are not shared in visual language. Usage-based linguistics, which has a cognitive approach, postulates that verbal language is a dynamic system of emergent symbolic units and flexible constraints (rules) that areshaped by the general cognitive processes involved in language use. On the basis of this definition, several parallelisms between verbal language and visual language can be found, mainly regarding their system of units, their cognitive dimension and their social dimension, which includes the communicative purpose. Specifically, for the purposes of the current research, several inferentially based visual expressions present in comics will be studied, focusing on the expression of movement, time, and change of state, in what we have called morphosyntactic visual inferences; and on the expression of emotions and pain, referred to as visual lexical inferences. This study brings a new approach to visual language research while enriching verbal language research.
