This article examines the use of the verb venir followed by an infinitive as in Ce projet de loi vient renforcer la politique du gouvernement and Le chocolat vient napper la génoise, use that would be erased in any translation as it does not refer to motion. Based on Ogata (2003), the only study devoted to the structure, we establish that venir is semantically bleached, that the subject argument is typically non-agentive and relatively abstract, and that a second argument (patient and/or locative) is obligatory. Our analysis then complements Ogata's work by refining certain semantic and grammatical parameters. In particular, we show that the determination and syntactic structure of both arguments, which are broadly defined and often post-modified in post-verbal position, provide the keys to accounting for the role of the structure in discourse. The article discusses future research prospects, starting from and including multimodal qualitative analyses. The main thesis of the paper is that the structure undergoes constructionalization, based on the form-meaning pairing of representing the (re)entry of a conceptual and discursive entity into the attentional field and/or the present of discourse. It describes the modification of a situation, at least partially pre-constructed in the culture and/or in discourse, thus building expectations that are implicated in the target utterances.
