Cinema e linguagem(ns): o ambíguo e o equívoco como o fundamento da comunicação humana em Being There, de Hal Ashby

    Ao se considerar as componentes do cinema, pode-se dizer que ele é, talvez, a forma artística mais completa de comunicação, uma vez que alia, essencialmente, as componentes imagem, música e linguística. O filme Being There – Muito Além do Jardim, no Brasil, e Bem-Vindo Mr. Chance, em Portugal –, de Hal Ashby, de 1979, aborda precisamente a dimensão linguística, questionando: em que medida as nossas interações linguísticas não se baseiam em equívocos de interpretação? O filme, que é baseado no romance homônimo de Jerzy Kosiński, assenta-se em uma estrutura diegética que evidencia questões relativas aos equívocos no uso da linguagem verbal e ao papel de fenômenos como a polissemia e a metáfora nesses equívocos e nas interações linguísticas. Este texto procura analisar, através do jardineiro Chance e das suas interações com as demais personagens, sobretudo no nível da comunicação linguística, como o filme apresenta a relação entre os quadros cognitivos pessoais que nos constroem enquanto indivíduos humanos e a forma como eles são expressos pela linguagem verbal, principalmente no processo metafórico. Além disso, o artigo examina como é possível que quadros de descodificação completamente díspares e equivocados funcionem em universos paralelos de interpretação.

    Considering all its elements, cinema is perhaps the most complete artistic form of communication since it simultaneously encapsulates visual, musical, and linguistic components. Hal Ashby’s film, Being there, precisely addresses this linguistic dimension by asking: to which extent are our linguistic interactions grounded upon misunderstandings? The film, based on the novel of the same title by Jerzy Kosiński, is grounded in a diegetic structure that addresses issues of misinterpretation in verbal language and the role of phenomena such as polysemy and metaphor in these misunderstandings and various linguistic interactions. This text attempts to analyze, by following the character of Chance (the gardener) and his interactions with the remaining characters, especially on a linguistic level, how the film introduces the relationship of personal cognitive frameworks that construct us as human individuals and how these are expressed by the verbal language, especially by the metaphorical process. Finally, the study examined how utterly unequal and misleading frameworks may still work in parallel universes of interpretation.
