    El artículo se refiere a la prensa que informó sobre la industria salitrera en general y, se centra, específicamente, en el papel que le cupo al periódico “El Abecé” de Antofagasta, en el año 1923, cuando de modo especial dedicó una serie de artículos a las oficinas salitreras del Cantón Central de la mencionada provincia. La importancia de este conjunto de reportajes radicó en la comparación entre un grupo de oficinas que laboraban con el sistema Shanks tradicional y la construcción y expectativas en torno a la Oficina “Chacabuco” que emplearía el sistema modificado. Tomando como referentes la impresión general del asiento industrial, la infraestructura productiva y las condiciones de vida, se revela el aporte de “El Abecé” al conocimiento de la industria calichera de la zona.

    This article is about the media coverage of the nitrate industry in general, and it focusses on the role that the newspaper El Abecé, published in Antofagasta, had in 1923, when it presented several articles about the nitrate exploitation sites of the main canton of the province. The importance of these articles is the comparison of a group of mines that operated with the traditional Shanks system and the construction and expectations around Oficina Chacabuco that was about to use the modified system. Taken as a reference the general impression of the industrial compound, the productive infraestructure, and the living conditions, El Abece makes a great contribution to the knowledge of the nitrate industry in the area.
