Research on abusive relationship has been focused mainly on physical abuse, with little researchon the study and evaluation of psychological aspects. Little research related to its measurementhas been found. One of the difficulties recognized by researchers and health professionals is theproblem in carrying out evaluations of the psychological abuse in this specific context. Mainobjective: To develop a scale to measure the existence or non-existence of psychological abusein couple violence. Method: (1) Creation of items for the psychological abuse scale in theabusive relationship (2) and application of such a scale to a sample composed a hundred ofwomen that have been mistreated within their relationships. Results: The psychological abusescale has been built with 47 items of multiple choices. The values of item-total correlation wereappropriate and the scale reliability showed a high Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, so a goodinternal consistency was showed. The correlations between the global scale and the subscaleswere also statistically significant, as well as the correlation between the new scale and items ofthe SOPAS scale, that also measures such psychological abuse. Conclusions: This new scaleintends to evaluate the different forms of psychological violence, and to facilitate the work ofhealth professionals at the time of diagnosis and enable them to report victims of psychologicalviolence in abusive relationships.
