In this study, we analyze the linguistic criteria used in published textsthat have received the Excelentísimo Ateneo de Sevilla award for stories andpoetry authored by individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Our analysis reveals that the discourse of individuals with functional diversityoften resides in a social gray area, straddling the line between normative andnon-normative communication. This tension arises from the conflict between theheteronomy imposed by conventional writing rules and a growing inclination towards written autonomy, stemming from the recognition of individuals withfunctional diversity as a cohesive group within our social fabric. This prompts anessential question: are public organizations’ efforts to support individuals withfunctional diversity always aligned with the goal of achieving full inclusion in ademocratic society?
