    Aunque Antonio Machado ya conocía y manejaba la lengua francesa, fue en 1899, a sus veinticuatro años, cuando visitó por vez primera París. En esta y otras posteriores estancias allí, perfeccionó su estudio y dominio y se impregnó de la literatura y cultura galas. Al estallar la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939), siguiendo su inclinación republicana, defendió en Madrid, Valencia y Barcelona al gobierno del Frente Popular. La prensa francesa, sobre todo la de izquierdas, se fijó con interés en su biografía y actitud durante la contienda, por lo que, al fallecer en Collioure el poeta español el 22 de febrero de 1939, esta le honró con elogiosos artículos, los cuales rescatamos aquí traducidos

    Although Antonio Machado already knew and mastered the French language, it was in 1899, at the age of twenty-four when he visited Paris for the first time. During this and the following stays there, he refined his study and knowledge and was influenced by the French literature and culture. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), following his Republican tendencies, he defended the Popular Front government in Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona. The French press, especially the left-wing press, took notice of his biography and attitude during the war, and when the Spanish poet died in Collioure on 22 February 1939, it honoured him with laudatory articles, which we have recovered translated here
