Brasil
Lygia Fagundes Telles is skilled at portraying the Brazilian upper middle class in her literature, mocking its values, habits and customs. Her book As Meninas, published in 1973, addresses the period of the civil-military dictatorship (1964–1985) through three social types of youth of the time. This article aimed to reflect, through bibliographic and documentary research, on the experiences of one of these three types described in the work: Lorena Vaz Leme, a representative of a traditional and decadent aristocratic family. It can be seen that, as a reflection of the authoritarianism experienced in Brazil, the anguish over her existential condition manifests itself. Lorena, for example, alienates herself in her own protection and highlights the crisis and continuity of values and behaviors rooted in patriarchy.
