El interior de un bien cultural a menudo contiene información sobre el proceso de creación, el artista que trabajó en él y el estado actual del objeto. La tomografía computarizada (TC) por rayos X en 3D permite visualizar e inspeccionar el interior de los bienes para obtener esta valiosa información. El escaneo de objetos de patrimonio cultural presenta desafíos debido a la gran diversidad de objetos. No solo en forma y tamaño diferentes, sino que los objetos también los posibles diferentes materiales constituyentes. Por otro lado, se trata de objetos delicados y valiosos, lo que plantea una dificultad a la hora de transportarlos a una instalación de TC. The interior of a cultural heritage object often contains information on how it is made, who the artist was, and what the current state of the object is. With 3D X-ray computed tomography (CT), the interior can be visualised and inspected to obtain this valuable information. Scanning cultural heritage objects poses challenges due to the large variety of objects. Not only are there many different shapes and sizes, but objects are also made of many different materials. The fragile and valuable nature of objects also makes transportation to a CT facility undesirable. These challenges make it difficult to apply CT imaging to the investigation of cultural heritage objects at large. In this article, we discuss the underlying principles, current state, and challenges of applying X-ray CT for cultural heritage objects and illustrate these with case studies from the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) collection and the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles).
