This chapter discusses the contributions of Makeda Silvera to the literature of women of color, and particularly queer women of color in Canada. Silvera’s commitment to opening spaces for the voices of marginalized women has been a constant focus throughout her literary career. Her publishing house, Sister Vision Press, fostered the emergence of women of color writers into the previously bleached Canadian literature scene. Silvera’s own writing is similarly gynocentric, focusing on “the feminine,” relations between women, intimate and familial. In search of the full expression of this relation, her language incorporates the Jamaican language of her foremothers.
