This chapter offers a revised introduction to the Black literatures of British Columbia, examining bold new texts even as it acknowledges an earlier archive of writings. Building upon the field and chronology established by author Wayde Compton in his essential 2001 anthology, Bluesprint: Black British Columbian Literature and Orature, this chapter makes select imaginative “returns” to the historical contexts of nineteenth-century arrivals and mid-twentieth-century communities, before gesturing more broadly to the “boom” of Black literature in British Columbia today.
