Organising, recording, and evaluating: The role of inventories in the study of the goods at the Museu de São Roque (Lisbon)

    Este estudio revela la historia de la Casa e Iglesia de São Roque, en Lisboa, a través de sus inventarios, elaborados desde el siglo XVI, cuando era una casa profesa de la Compañía de Jesús, hasta el siglo XX, cuando se hicieron otros para comprender la colección del museo que allí se instaló en 1905. Estos inventarios, organizados de diferentes maneras, no siempre valoraban los mismos objetos, ni registraban todo lo que existía en el espacio. Del mismo modo, no siempre atribuían importancia al patrimonio que inventariaban, y se observa que casi toda la importancia se concedía al registro de las piezas. Teniendo en cuenta las vicisitudes por las que ha pasado la colección, este estudio pretende revelar un caso raro del patrimonio portugués, en el que la investigación ha permitido reconstruir la evolución de la colección en este espacio.

    This study reveals the history of the House and Church of São Roque in Lisbon through its inventories, drawn up from the 16th century, when it was a professed house of the Society of Jesus, to the 20th century, when others were made to understand the collection of the museum that was set up there in 1905. These inventories, organised in different ways, didn’t always value the same objects, nor did they always record everything that existed in the space. In the same way, they didn’t always attribute importance to the heritage they listed, and it can be seen that almost all the importance was given to recording the items. Considering the vicissitudes that the collection has gone through, this study aims to reveal a rare case of Portuguese heritage, where research has made it possible to reconstruct the evolution of the collection in this space.
