  • Ferrara has been repeatedly affected by seismic damage induced by the activity of reversed faults of the foredeep basin, as in 1570. Local effects are strongly modulated by the subsurface stratigraphy, which is characterized by considerable thicknesses of unlithified continental sediments, inducing coseismic liquefaction of sands and strong amplification of the seismic waves at variable frequencies. This context has largely influenced the damage to many historic architectural structures.
