  • Resumen
    • The names of Roman governors did not regularly appear on the local coinages of provincial cities before the second half of the first century BCE. However, a bronze coin from the Mysian city of Atarneus, which has long been interpreted as showing that a C. Asinius was proconsul of Asia, seems to present an example of early presence of Roman officials on coinage issued in the Roman provinces. A new specimen of this coin reveals that the named proconsul was not an Asinius, but the C. Atinius (Labeo Macerio) who was governor in 122/121 BCE, already attested on cistophori and gold staters of Ephesus. This represents the first occurrence of the name of a Roman official on the bronze coina?e of a city in the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire.
