Objective: This study aims to investigate the environmental challenges and develop sustainable strategies for the Port of Colombo's mega-hub development, ensuring a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
Theoretical Framework: The study is grounded in the Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT), which posits that environmental concerns can drive innovations and changes in industries, leading to more sustainable practices.
Method: This study adopts a mixed-methods research approach, combining deductive thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with stakeholders and content analysis of secondary data.
Results and Discussion: The findings highlight the critical importance of integrated planning, eco-conscious infrastructure investments, and collaborative governance in ensuring the port's long-term sustainability. The study identifies effective strategies for mitigating environmental impacts, including adopting green technologies, sustainable practices, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
Research Implications: This study provides policymakers, port authorities, and stakeholders with actionable insights to navigate the complexities of sustainable port development, contributing to a more environmentally responsible and resilient port ecosystem.
Originality/Value: This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on sustainable port development, providing a foundation for future scholars and practitioners to develop effective sustainability strategies for mega hub ports.
